We offer one-on-one tutoring, the best way for your student to get an SAT prep program tailored specifically to there needs. At the same time our rates are extremely competitive (see packages at bottom of the page).

The SAT is arguably the most important test a high school student will take during their high school career. This one test is weighted almost as much as the student’s GPA in the college application process. For this reason it is essential that the student is as prepared as possible to take the SAT test.

So how does one do well on the SAT? The trick is STRATEGY and REPITITION. Our tutors can help students learn when to guess and when not to, how to eliminate answers, how to successfully finish each section. We also teach specific strategies for the math, verbal, and writing sections. Every week we will assign a practice exam from the Official College Board SAT Study Book (included in our course package). This book allows the student to prepare by taking real college SAT exams! The following session we will go over what the student had missed and how s/he can improve. By taking multiple tests under simulated test conditions the student will become very comfortable with the exam and very prepared when it comes time to take the actual exam.

Below is information on each section of the exam.

The Math Section
The level of mathematics on the SAT is not very advanced. It’s often basic high school math and does not include calculus or even precalculus but rather focuses on algebra, geometry, basic probabilities, and number theory. Where the difficulty comes in is in how the SAT attempts to trick you and make you spend more time on the question than is necessary. Often the SAT includes questions in which there is more than one way to get to the right solution. The most obvious way may actually be very difficult. But if one looks at the answer choices, one can often eliminate most of the answers just by doing a quick estimate of what the possible answers would be. Our tutors will help the student to learn how to spot these tricks so that s/he can eliminate most of the answers even if s/he does not know how to solve the problem.

The Verbal Section
There are several tricks to the verbal section of the exam. The most important is to increase your vocabulary. This does not just include studying key words (which you should do) but also learning word parts. For example, you may not know the word ambidextrous. However, if you know that the prefix ambi- means more than one, or both (such as in ambivalent & ambiguous) and you know the word dexterity (skilled with the hands), you may be able to figure out that the word ambidextrous means the ability to use both hands. Becoming familiar with word parts can help you to guess the meaning of words you may have never even seen before. Other strategies for this section include how to read critically, looking for positive and negative words, and more.

The Writing Section
To do well on the writing section of the exam, you must know how to organize your ideas and write what the SAT readers are looking for. You don’t need to use obtuse vocabulary in this section to get a high score but you must be able to write in a clear, well-organized and concise fashion, all while taking a timed test. Our writing tutors can help you perfect these skills.
